Mirror Mirror on the Wall
“There is no fence around time that has gone. You can go back and have what you like if you remember it well enough.” — Richard Llewellyn
I look at the teachers around me and wonder what they were like when they started their teaching career. Where they this cynical in the beginning? Did they like students back then? Did they have great ideas of how to change the system? Were they always this weird? Is this the person they wanted to be 20 years into teaching? I hope so.
This makes me wonder what type of teacher I will be when I “grow up.” I am already very cynical and kinda quirky. Will I become a teacher who hates the world and is incredibly odd? I think that would be an interesting combination.
To make sure I become the teacher I want to be, I intend to reflect. We all need to reflect. Go over the day. Figure out what we like and don’t like. How we would change the day if we could do it over. Not that I will regret the mistakes of the day. Instead I could use the reflection to plan for future events. Maybe this should be a staff wide daily activity. We all spend the 10 minutes at the end of the day to reflect. And then jot down our thoughts. Much like journaling, but more focused.
I declare today to be a day of reflection. Reflect on the day or yesterday. Jot down your thoughts. If nothing else you will lessen the load you might carry home. Happy reflecting! And here’s hoping your the “fairest of them all.”
